Lord of the Rings: Gollum is slated for a September launch. In anticipation of when the game hits the market, the developers behind the title, Nacon, and Daedelic Entertainment have released a brand-new gameplay trailer

The latest trailer shows the titular Gollum navigating unique and visually magnificent locations while trying to remain largely unseen. He jumps between bushes and overgrowth trying to evade other humanoid creatures and even a dragon

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is based solely on the critically-acclaimed trilogy of novels by J.R.R Tolkien and focuses on Gollum, a personality that Smeagol develops after being corrupted by the One Ring.

The game, therefore, takes place after Smeagol finds the One Ring, but before the events of the Fellowship of the Ring, wherein Gollum undertakes a journey stretching from the Misty Mountains to the outskirts of Mordor to recover his Precious.

As is substantiated by the latest trailer, the game will rely primarily on stealth, requiring players to move through the world as silently as possible lest they wish to awaken terrors that seek to stop Gollum in his tracks.

The game will also feature a rather unique mechanic whereby players will be able to choose whether to let Gollum take control, or whether they’d prefer the biggest decisions in the game to be made by Smeagol’s kind-natured goodness. Players won’t have to commit to either persona though as they’ll be able to switch between personalities to leverage the differences and unique characteristics and gameplay options associated with each.

As the publishers phrase it: ‘In order to survive the dangers of his journey through Middle-earth, Gollum has to sneak and climb and use all his cunning. He also has to deal with his Hobbit-self—Smeagol. It’s up to the players if they want Gollum to have the upper hand when it comes to making important decisions, or if they prefer to allow Smeagol to take over.’

When the game was first announced, the powers that be didn’t release much information about it. As time has marched on, however, we’ve seen the release of numerous trailers, promotional content, and extra details.

Overall, we’re expecting the Lord of the Rings: Gollum to be a visually appealing game, with interesting gameplay options and reunions with some of our LOTR characters, as teased by the publishers/ developers. Provided you’re interested in playing as Gollum/ Smeagol, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum should be an entertaining experience.

The game launches for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC on September 1st, with a Nintendo Switch port following later in 2022.

I hail from the awe-inspiring beauty of South Africa. Born and raised in Pretoria, I've always had a deep interest in local history, particularly conflicts, architecture, and our country's rich past of being a plaything for European aristocracy. 'Tis an attempt at humor. My interest in history has since translated into hours at a time researching everything from the many reasons the Titanic sank (really, it's a wonder she ever left Belfast) to why Minecraft is such a feat of human technological accomplishment. I am an avid video gamer (Sims 4 definitely counts as video gaming, I checked) and particularly enjoy playing the part of a relatively benign overlord in Minecraft. I enjoy the diverse experiences gaming offers the player. Within the space of a few hours, a player can go from having a career as an interior decorator in Sims, to training as an archer under Niruin in Skyrim. I believe video games have so much more to teach humanity about community, kindness, and loyalty, and I enjoy the opportunity to bring concepts of the like into literary pieces.
